Meet the animals

There are lots and lots of animals at Wetheriggs! Sometimes we are looking after them for a short while before they return to their owners; and of course we are always looking to find our animals new owners wherever possible. But new animals arrive all the time. Which means that when you visit us you never know quite what you will find!

Of course, we love and care for all the animals—but let's be honest, there are a few superstars amongst them!

You can find more photos of the animals on our gallery page!

Arti the red fox

Arti came to us as a young cub when he was found on his own in the wild. We found him covered in sheep ticks and had to pick each one out. Once we got rid of them all he soon perked up and now has become a firm favourite at Wetheriggs.

Nobby and Sisco the Alpacas

Nobby, on loan from a local breeder, recently joined Sisco.

Billie and Corey the Cockatoos

Corey joined Billie in July 2010 and both can be seen flying free around the site.

Mick the Tamworth pig

One of the all time favorites at Wetheriggs and no doubt the King. Mick is a Tamworth (Britain’s only red variety of pig) and came to us in 2006 when just a piglet. A gentle giant of a pig, but beware if you are feeding him, he will eat anything that gets in the way of his food: an arm, leg, head or anything.

Gandalf the Blue & Gold Macaw

Gandalf is a very popular with visitors. He loves showing off flying round the site and talking to people walking past.

George the Ruppells Griffin vulture

Our star of newspaper, magazine, radio and television. George arrived between Christmas and New Year 2008. We are looking to build him a new aviary. Please help if you can.

Bonnie and Ted the Shetland ponies

These old animals came to us in Autumn 2008. They had really bad feet but are now well on the road to a complete recovery.

Chris and Lady Di the Rheas

Our male rhea Chris (that's right, CHRIS RHEA!) was brought to us as a chick. We didn't want him to have a solitary life and got an egg from a breeder … which hatched into Lady Di.
