Meet the animals
There are lots and lots of animals at Wetheriggs! Sometimes we are looking after them for a short while before they return to their owners; and of course we are always looking to find our animals new owners wherever possible. But new animals arrive all the time. Which means that when you visit us you never know quite what you will find!
Of course, we love and care for all the animals—but let's be honest, there are a few superstars amongst them!
You can find more photos of the animals on our gallery page!
Nobby and Pedro the Alpacas
Nobby, on loan from a local breeder, recently joined Pedro, who arrived from North Yorkshire via the Police.
Willis the Pole Cat Ferret
Willis was reported to Durham police when he was found homeless and has found a new home with us. He has recently been joined by four further ferret cubs as well as an albino male.
Mick the Tamworth pig
One of the all time favorites at Wetheriggs and no doubt the King. Mick is a Tamworth (Britain’s only red variety of pig) and came to us in 2006 when just a piglet. A gentle giant of a pig, but beware if you are feeding him, he will eat anything that gets in the way of his food: an arm, leg, head or anything.
Charlie the Blue & Gold Macaw
Charlie has been a firm favourite at Wetheriggs since the summer of 2008. Most of the day he can be found with our other blue & gold macaw (Ruben) playing in the trees above the Newt Pond. Charlie will talk to you for ages when in the mood.
George the Ruppells Griffin vulture
Our star of newspaper, magazine, radio and television. George arrived between Christmas and New Year 2008. We are looking to build him a new aviary. Please help if you can.
Bonnie and Clyde the Shetland ponies
These old animals came to us in Autumn 2008. They had really bad feet but are now well on the road to a complete recovery.
Robyn the European Eagle Owl
Robyn was found by the police in Sherwood Close (Durham City), hence the name!
Chris and Lady Di the Rheas
Our male rhea Chris (that's right, CHRIS RHEA!) was brought to us as a chick. We didn't want him to have a solitary life and got an egg from a breeder … which hatched into Lady Di.
Camilla Porker Bowles the Kune Kune pig
Camilla and her sister Scratchy were taken from a council house in Manchester. In the pigs’ defence they had much better manners than the people who lived with them!
