Meet the volunteers
Wetheriggs is organised and run by a mixture of committed staff and volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to help care for the animals. Our volunteers include young children and University students who are training at Newton Rigg, University of Cumbria.
Volunteering for us gives you the opportunity to learn more about the animals, animal husbandry, animal handling, animal nutrition and much more… oh and it's lots of fun!
If you are thinking of volunteering or would like some more information, pop over to our volunteering page.
Jim
Jim is Chair of the Trustees and also volunteers two days each week. Although he works with all of the animals he has a great interest in the conservation side of the rare poultry breeds.
Karin
Karin covers all aspects of our work but is often found working in the Discovery Centre with the reptiles and inverts.
Ted
Ted joined us in March 2009. A joiner from Aspatria, he broke his leg in November last year and has been unable to resume his profession. He has always kept animals of one sort or another, from pigeons and birds of prey to reptiles and fowl, and is now using his handy skills and knowledge in his new role as head of maintenance.
Gaynor
Gaynor has been keeping busy in retirement as a volunteer at the centre since April. She had been involved with horses and ponies for many years and, as she says, ‘likes to have a go at anything’.
